To celebrate the release of their latest track ‘Ydekwiws – Live’, I thought I would revisit Pink Mirrors debut single ‘Hook’. Released in October 2019, ‘Hook’ has since amassed over 2,500 streams on Spotify alone: excellent work for a prospect. The band, formerly known as Ante, formed in 2018 and consists of Filip, Oli, and Larry. In the two years since their advent, Pink Mirrors have gone from strength to strength, honing their brash, punky sound. This self-proclaimed ‘spank rock’ has begun to capture people’s attention, and rightly so.
‘Ydekwiws’ is a continuation of Pink Mirrors hardcore energy and no-nonsense attitude. This attitude can be seen in all elements of ‘Hook’, especially through the socially conscious lyrics laid down so perfectly by Filip. The song is a somewhat satirical look at pop music and how the masses are drawn to it. “I don’t care, you’ve hooked me” is the lyric that sums up the general attitude of ‘Hook’. As for the instrumental side of things, ‘Hook’ has elements of perfect multitracking which add to its all-round textured nature. There is an electronic backing track (which they impressively perform with live) that pads out the mids flawlessly but also gives the song a futuristic, sci-fi feel. The guitar solo that succeeds the bridge has been multitracked with the same strange automated sounds that reinforces this sci-fi influence. This multitracking also compliments the extremely fuzzy guitar tone that Oli pioneers on this heavy punk track. The description I have given of ‘Hook’s’ sonic components would lend itself to a brash and aggressive vocalist. However, Filip manages to sing clearly above the fuzz and grit of the rest of the track. The vocals sit in the mid-high range which allows for the rhythm section to punch through. Larry’s drumming complements the track to the nth degree, not overbearing but acting as the glue binding the song together. It must be said, however, as much as I love this track, it is the final 30 seconds that hit home. All three members exhibit their talents through this sinister breakdown that can get a crowd of any size off their feet. I cannot wait for new music from this band that is on the rise so everyone, be warned.
